The Columbia River Business Alliance has received a $25,000 grant from the Meyer Memorial Trust to study the possibility of bringing local nonprofits together under one roof.

Peter Huhtala, executive director of the business alliance, said sharing space in Astoria could help alleviate budget pains across the local nonprofit sector and revitalize vacant property downtown. It could also motivate local groups to share other resources as the economy clamps down on funding.

The deepening recession and widening gaps in services for Oregon's most vulnerable citizens has prompted one of the state's leading charitable groups to look at the best ways to coordinate nonprofit organizations on the North Coast.

About 60 people - from Clatsop, Tillamook and Columbia counties - representing local governments and agencies, nonprofit organizations, faith organizations and the public gathered Wednesday morning in the Liberty Theater in Astoria, to discuss their growing challenges as demands for their services increase and their resources dwindle.

Shawna Sykes, of the Oregon Employment Department, leads a discussion in a break-out session about work. Considering ideas to maintain jobs for the underemployed are, from left, Srunny Huong, from Oregon Department of Human Services, Wayne Poole, Pig-N-Pancake Restaurants, and Peter Huhtala, Columbia River Business Alliance.

Meyer Memorial Trust gives co-location grant to business alliance
Columbia River Business Journal, June, 2009

Astoria non-profit groups are one step closer to a long-term strategy for sharing resources, thanks to a grant from the Meyer Memorial Trust, acquired by the Columbia River Business Alliance, based in Astoria. CRBA submitted the grant proposal on behalf of the Clatsop County Nonprofits Shared Spaces Project….

…Huhtala said the Meyer Memorial Trust put out a request for proposals this past winter for the grant, specifically aimed at organizations seeking to co-locate.
“Meyer has been awesome helping us from the beginning to be able to intelligently answer the RFP,” he said.
